Original stone restored for a contemporary wine room
The homeowners wanted a wine room that paired the character of their century-old home with distinctly contemporary finishes. Coppola Brothers uncovered and restored the original foundation stone, making it the focal point of a room with custom seating and carefully selected translucent doors.
- Historic character brought back into view. After recognizing the concealed stone from an adjoining electrical closet, we coordinated weeks of careful hand removal of the plaster and stucco. Specialist masons repaired missing stones and deteriorated mortar joints, using local river sand to match the existing masonry’s color.
- Distinctive materials from 3form. We paired custom door frames with translucent panels from 3form, selected for their color and degree of opacity. The panels created a partially obscured entrance and a contemporary counterpoint to the restored stone.
- Cabinetry fitted to the original walls. Handmade cabinetry and bench seating were shaped to the room, with the bench back carefully cut to follow the irregular contours of the stone.
The homeowners gained a distinctive place to gather while retaining the original material that gives their home its character.
